Music workshop: Chinese Guqin and contemporary Chinese life - Friday 25 January

A seven-stringed bridgeless zither, the Chinese Guqin was invented some 3000 years ago, and it stands as China’s best-known classical music instrument. Since November 2003, the instrument has been included as an item in UNESCO’s Oral and Intangible Heritage project.
In this workshop, Beijing-based contemporary Chinese Guqin master, Mr Wang Peng, will introduce some basic knowledge about the instrument, including its structure, history and crafting. He will also explain some ways to help identify and appreciate a well-made Guqin. By looking into the philosophical and aesthetic basis of the instrument, Mr Wang will take you into the connections between traditional Chinese aesthetics and Chinese daily living and in so doing he will show how you could enrich your life through music-related cultural activities.
