Expressions of interest: Learn Auslan sign language on campus

Valid from: Thursday 18 April 2019 to Thursday 16 May 2019

Want to learn a new language, understand deaf culture, and connect with others?

Learn Auslan sign language, on campus!

Following the success of Campbelltown campus pilot in early 2019, we're looking to trial the same beginner's course (Deaf Society SL1) on other campuses later this year (potentially Spring session), and are currently receiving expressions of interest (EOI) from staff and students.

This is what some of the participants have said about the course:

“This course is amazing. It’s an interactive way to learn a new language using your body.”
“I am more confident in being able to communicate effectively in a more inclusive manner.”
“Learning Auslan not only gave me a new skill that can help me connect with others, the course added to my cultural education. I got to learn about and experience a world that I thought was so similar to my own. I now understand how unique, descriptive, passionate, and creative their world can be."

If you're interested in participating in future courses, please submit an EOI by visiting https://orgsync.com/128848/forms/346007.

The pilot is part of a larger idea to have Western as an ongoing site for Auslan sign language classes, and to create Auslan conversational groups, as a way to be inclusive, increase employability skills and connect the University and the community in Greater Western Sydney.

If you're interested in promoting the EOIs or in collaborating, please get in touch with myself and Irene Toro via email - m.vincent@westernsydney.edu.au and i.toro@westernsydney.edu.au.
