WSU Parramatta City Provost - 2022 NAIDOC morning tea and art activity

NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) celebrations are held around Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.
Please join us on Tuesday 5 July for an art activity guided by Michelle Napanangka Earl - Artist & Basket Weaver. Using natural grasses and contemporary techniques learn the ancient art of basket weaving. Michelle will pass on her knowledge of Aboriginal Culture and weaving, as well as answer questions you may have. You will leave the event with your own small woven basket that is yours to keep.
As a proud Darkinjung woman with Wonnarua ties Michelle has a personal connection to The Hunter Valley and respectfully teaches and celebrates the Traditional Aboriginal Culture of the Communities that reside across the valley. The knowledge and skills that Michelle shares has been passed down for thousands of years, “it is, as it always has been”.

Places in the art activity are limited and will have a staggered start time to allow maximum guidance from Michelle - you will need to select which stream (start time) you wish to be in and your time will be confirmed with you in the days prior to the event. Workshops start at 11.15am and 11.45am with all sessions concluding by 2pm (you are free to leave at any time after you've started your basket - it's something you can finish yourself at home or you can stay for the entire event). Please select your preferred time when you complete the registration form.
There will be morning tea available during the event, catered for by Goanna Hut, an Indigenous-owned catering company who infuse modern cuisine with a native twist like delicious native plum cupcakes.
The NAIDOC 2022 theme – Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! – calls for all of us to continue to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for systemic change and keep rallying. Whether it’s seeking proper environmental, cultural and heritage protections, Constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism—we must do it together. It must be a genuine commitment by all of us to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! and support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative, and cooperative reforms. We need to move beyond just acknowledgement, good intentions, empty words and promises, and hollow commitments. Enough is enough. The relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non‑Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights.
This is also time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities over generations—they have been the heroes and champions of change, of equal rights and even basic human rights.
