Types of modern slavery include human trafficking, servitude, forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage, and the worst forms of child labour.

Did you know…
Australia, as the 6th country in the world to have an official national estimate of modern slavery, has estimated that between 2015 and 2017, there were 1,900+ modern slavery victims in Australia.

Did you know…
Modern slavery risks can be linked to certain products (such as construction material), certain sectors (such as cleaning), certain geographic regions (such as those with poor governance and rule of law, conflict, migration flows, and socio economic factors).

Did you know…
Australia has enacted a Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth), to which the University must comply. The University, as an entity to whom the Act applies, submits an annual statement on its activities to identify and address modern slavery risks in its operations and supply chains. These Statements are uploaded to the Australian Government Modern Slavery Register: https://modernslaveryregister.gov.au/.

The University has a published Modern Slavery Prevention Policy - https://policies.westernsydney.edu.au/document/view.current.php?id=363 - that sets out its approach for Modern Slavery prevention, its commitment to identifying incidents and addressing risks of Modern Slavery to its business and supply chains, and to ensure it meets its legislative responsibilities. The University prohibits any of its employees from engaging in, permitting, or inducing any form of Modern Slavery from occurring; or hindering any investigation in relation to alleged Modern Slavery.

Internal reporting is critical to the University’s ongoing commitments under its Modern Slavery Prevention Policy. Anyone can report a breach or suspected breach of this Policy pursuant to its Whistleblowing procedures:

Each quarter, the Compliance Program Unit will post information on modern slavery identification and prevention, including updating on the University’s compliance with relevant obligations under the Act, and how to internally report on any suspicions or actual incidences.
