Free course on Mathematica for staff and HDR candidates - 2 and 4 February

From: Alexie Papanicolaou

Valid from: Wednesday 19 January 2022 to Tuesday 1 February 2022

Dear colleagues,

Happy new year!

It is with excitement that we are advertising for the first Short Program on Research Skill Training sponsored by the office of the PVC-STEM.

These Programs are supported by Western's Teaching Learning and Development and are freely available to all Western staff of any level (academic or professional, latter are encouraged to attend) and HDR candidates (before or after their Confirmation of Candidature). MRes and Honours candidates are also encouraged to apply if they are supported by their supervisor.

This first course, run by Professor Roozbeh Hazrat, will introduce Mathematica, a powerful and versatile tool that for modelling and creating simulations/ visualisations.

Mathematica is used by scientists, engineers, and financial institutions to efficiently model and analyse data, visualise and interpret graphs, and address research problems. The course covers two parts suitable for complete novices and those familiar with MATLAB. The first part covers an introduction to Mathematica for people who have never used this software before, demonstrating basic operations, creating and deploying computations, producing professional, magnificent two- and three-dimensional dynamic and interactive graphics. We then build a model from scratch showing Mathematica's immense value for scientists. At the end of the workshop you will be aware of how to solve problems elegantly and easily and can begin implementing it for your own research.

There will be an online asynchronous component (downloading and familiarising with the software) and a hands-on component (Wednesday and Friday, 2 and 4 February: 10 - 12am and 2 - 5pm, i.e. five hours each day for two days).

In order to register, please fill out this short EOI: https://forms.office.com/r/AM72wXuKur

The cost is subsidised to be free to all members of Western. We will be undertaking a selection process if numbers exceed capacity.

Please send queries regarding this course to Professor Roozbeh Hazrat (R.Hazrat@westernsydney.edu.au) and queries about the advert to myself, Associate Professor Alexie Papanicolaou , at A.Papanicolaou@westernsydney.edu.au.
