The Academic Literacy Advisory Group (ALAG) invites you to join the new Viva Engage group “Academic Literacy Resources Community of Practice” at https://engage.cloud.microsoft/main/org/westernsydney.edu.au/groups/eyJfdHlwZSI6Ikdyb3VwIiwiaWQiOiIxODMwNTAyNDgxOTIifQ/all

The first Community of Practice (CoP) meeting will be held on Friday 19 April, 12pm – 1:30pm.

Guest Speakers at the first CoP meeting are:

* Dr Adrian Hale, Senior Lecturer, School of Humanities and Communication Arts

Presentation: "Keys to Academic English" by Dr Adrian Hale and Dr Helen Basides (CUP) is an invaluable reference for commencing students across a range of humanities disciplines. Dr Adrian Hale, an expert in academic literacy, will provide an overview of this important work.

* Paul Jewell, Business School Librarian, Library Academic Services Team

Presentation: "Critical Thinking Resources developed by WSU Library" - Paul Jewell will discuss recent collaborations with Library and Academic Staff on the development of resources for Business School Students and a range of research-informed academic literacy resources in other disciplines.

* Shivani Suresh, Library Student Partner Co-ordinating Lead and Master of Public Health Student, Western Sydney University

Presentation: "Student Perspectives on Working with Staff to Develop Academic Literacy Resources" - Shivani Suresh will draw on her experiences working with staff across the university and explain how student-staff partnership can enhance program and resource development through co-creation and co-inquiry.

The CoP has three key aims:

- To engage with the scholarship of teaching and learning

- To discuss best approaches to developing equitable academic literacy support at Western Sydney University in alignment with the university-wide Academic Literacy Strategy

- For Academic staff, professional staff, and students to share best practice examples and resources, and shape academic literacy at WSU

Topics covered in the CoP will align with the eight key skills defined in the Academic Literacy Strategy: reading and writing; study and exam success; speaking, collaborating and presenting; studying with integrity, information skills; research skills; digital literacy; and mathematics and statistics.
