How can we understand the resurgence of masculinism in Australia and elsewhere?

How can we challenge antifeminism and the increase in misogyny?

Lucy Nicholas will discuss the changes in contemporary masculinity and the worrying public resurgence of reactionary misogyny, especially online, and how we can use academic ideas to make sense of them.
They will consider the emotional and ideological drivers of these ideas, some of the impacts they have, and how they may be challenged.
Lucy is currently working on two streams of research: one on sexuality and gender diversity, and one on men, masculinity, and violence prevention.

Dr Nicholas is the author of two influential books. Their first book, “Queer Post-Gender Ethics,”, explores the intersections of gender, sexuality, and ethics.Their second book, “The Persistence of Global Masculinism,” co-authored with Chris Agius, sheds light on the complex dynamics of masculinity in a global context.

Western Sydney University was placed first in the world in the 2022 and 2023 Times Higher Education Impact rankings, the only global performance measure that assesses universities against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The Library’s Thought Leadership event series aims to celebrate and promote this #1 ranking, complementing work being undertaken across the University as part of its Sustainability and Resilience Decadal Strategy 2030.
