Academic Promotion - Writing sessions

From: Kim Nemetz

Valid from: Saturday 7 September 2024 to Sunday 8 September 2024

Are you thinking about applying for promotion?

In response to research from Western’s SAGE team involving staff at Western, our Academic Promotions Working Group will be running a ‘Shut Up and Write for Promotion’ program over the next few months to support promotion applicants in putting together their application. Noting that the next round applications will be due in February, this program provides the opportunity to start engaging in the writing process now, with the support of experienced staff from across the University.

The fortnightly sessions include short presentations from a range of speakers who will give advice about preparing the different sections of the application. Importantly, most of the session will be focused writing time where participants can work on those sections. The program also includes sessions dedicated to writing only. These sessions offer applicants a space to collectively make regular progress on their promotion applications, to build stronger applications that have been developed over time. This is an activity that may be useful to colleagues who are struggling to write their application, whether they are finding it hard to make time, or are suffering from lack of confidence (all common problems for junior and senior staff).

When: Fortnightly, beginning on Thursday 19 September 12:30-2.30pm. A calendar invite will be forwarded to those registering.

Who is invited? Everyone planning to apply for promotion in 2025 and beyond.
Do I have to share my application? No, this is time for you to work individually on your promotion application but in a collective environment on a regular basis.
Do I have to attend every session if I register? No you don't have to attend every session. However, we do encourage participants to attend as many sessions as they can so that you benefit from having regular time set aside to work on your promotion application.
